Our History
211 Alameda County, offering empathy and expert guidance to all since 1976.
1976
211 Alameda County (formerly Eden I&R) was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to provide centralized information and referral services to Alameda County residents.
Late 1970s–1980s
Expanded language access services and developed Alameda County’s first comprehensive human services directory, The Big Blue Book. Created housing and homeless support databases in response to regional crises, including the Loma Prieta earthquake.
1990s
Launched after-hours services for Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services and expanded specialized housing and health information programs.
2007
Officially launched 211 Alameda County as the centralized communication and referral system for the county.
2009–2014
Served as a primary access point for homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing programs. Expanded digital equity outreach and launched disaster preparedness initiatives.
2020–2022
Played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, connecting residents to emergency rental assistance, food distribution, healthcare access, and financial relief programs.
Today
Today, 211 Alameda County serves more than 60,000 residents annually and remains a trusted, 24/7 lifeline for individuals and families across the region.
